This is the Hair Diet

Act+Acre Team

We believe that the concept of a ‘diet’ has lost its meaning. Often a negative connotation, the idea of a diet is culturally connected to unsustainable weight loss, a sense of not being enough, or an eternal quest to reach a fleeting state of being that’s incongruent with true health.

But if you look up ‘diet’ in the dictionary, the definition that stands out most is “habitual nourishment,’ a phrase we absolutely love...especially when we’re talking about healthy hair.

When it comes to supporting our strands, nutrition is everything. As hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body, it constantly needs a nutritional flow to ensure strands are strong, supple, and can withstand external stressors. Note that hair is just dead protein cells—the aftermath of an internal nutrient flow mixed with amino acids and pushed out through the scalp follicle. Great hair is a direct result of the quality and consistency of that nutrient flow.

On average, we have 120 strands of hair on the scalp at one time—90% that are growing and 10% in a resting phase. Through every critical stage, hair looks to the body’s rhythms to supply just the right amount of key vitamins, minerals, and proteins to optimize hair growth and strength.

Here’s where it gets tricky. Hair, ever so selfless and metabolically active, responds directly to any imbalance — think a lack of nutrients or everyday stress — and can’t help but redirect its own nutrients to other parts of the body. If you’re sick, stressed, or generally off, the body redirects nutrients from your strands to vital organs that may need a bit of extra support.

That’s why feeding your hair a diet rich in targeted nutrients can make all the difference - allowing for a direct flow of strand-specific elements where it’s needed most: the scalp.

This is what your hair craves:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega 3, a family of polyunsaturated fats, are naturally found in the scalp skin and through natural oil production. Supplementing these gives the body additional oils to prevent a dry sky and encourage shiny hair.
  • Protein: The hair structure is built from hardened proteins known as keratin. When your diet lacks protein (think: leafy greens, beans, etc.), hair grows slower and strands become weaker.
  • Biotin: When biotin (also known as B7), is consumed, it stimulates keratin production and increases the rate of follicle growth.
  • Iron: Hair follicles require a healthy serving of oxygen. Iron steps in to boost circulation and carry oxygen straight to the roots, encouraging faster and longer strands.
  • Vitamin B: The trio of B Vitamins (B6, B12 + folate) work together to break down fats and carbohydrates, all while encouraging proper red blood cell formation...which gives hair follicles much needed oxygen.
  • Vitamin C: This loved vitamin helps create collagen and helps the body absorb iron, both necessary for hair growth.
  • Zinc: A mineral that binds hair proteins to prevent hair loss and strengthen the follicle. Zinc also helps your oil glands produce enough to protect hair from dryness.

How to Boost Absorption: Ways to boost absorption of our Plant Based Vegan Capsules /p>

  • Eat colorfully: Eat a variety of different foods every day and avoid eating the same foods—for example the same breakfast every day. Mix it up! This ensures a broad variety of nutrients from your diet and better absorption of the elements in our capsules.
  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake:  Alcohol and caffeine-based drinks reduce the number of digestive enzymes in your system. They also damage the cell linings of the stomach and intestines, making it harder for the nutrients from digestion of food or capsules to enter the bloodstream
  • Go easy on the egg whites: Biotin absorption is inhibited by avidin, a substance in egg whites. If you’ve been skipping the yolks, it’s a good idea to reintroduce them.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Our digestive system is heavily reliant on our hydration levels as our blood cannot transport nutrients without enough water in our system.
