Summer Hair 101

Act+Acre Team

While the summer sun feels delicious on the skin, it can do serious damage to the scalp. From discoloring strands, to causing frizz, to breaking the hair cuticles, it’s worth taking a few proactive steps to protect from unnecessary damage. Note that if you have lighter hair, you’re more vulnerable to damage due to the lack of pigment to protect from UV rays.

Start summer off right with a few tips on keeping hair healthy all through the season:

+ Protect the scalp

This looks like using scalp-specific SPF or powdered products. We recommend Supergoop’s Poof Part Powder to provide comprehensive UV coverage or using lightweight sunscreen on your part.

+ Bring on the hats

Wide-brimmed, straw, waterproof, over-the-top—any hat is a great hat. Bonus points if it’s made out of UV-blocking fabric! Headscarves and bandanas are great (and stylish) alternatives.

+ Enter the summer hair routine

Summer is synonymous to long days outdoors, sweat, and water. If you’re coming from a relatively tame winter, prioritize deeply hydrating your strands with conditioning products that include UV-protectant ingredients. You’ll also want to shampoo more often to cleanse your scalp from sweat and dirt buildup and focus on hydrating your ends.

+ Work with your environment

Posted somewhere humid and tropical? Look to oil and leave-in conditioners to help with the frizz. If you’re somewhere a bit drier, a deep conditioner is your best friend. Get in tune with your environment and treat your hair accordingly.

+ Stay hydrated

Your skin is your biggest organ—scalp included—and thrives when properly hydrated. Be sure to keep a water bottle close this summer to encourage a healthy scalp from the inside out.

+ Enjoy the sun...when the time is right
