In light of International Women’s Day, we wanted to catch up with one of our favorite female founders in the game—our very own Helen Reavey.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?

Probably when their assertiveness in the workplace is taken the wrong way. When a man acts assertive in the workplace, it is usually overlooked or considered the norm, whereas often when the roles are reversed, women can often be labelled “aggressive”—when really all they’re doing is speaking with authority, and usually well deserved authority at that.

There’s a big difference between the two, and we need to work to remove that negative connotation. Women should feel powerful and assertive every day, and feel the freedom to behave that way.

What woman has positively impacted/inspired you in your career, and what’s one lesson she taught you?

Absolutely my mum. From a very young age she instilled a great work ethic in me that has carried me through life. She’s taught me that women can work hard and be successful in their career while prioritizing their own well being. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without her and the lessons she has taught me.

What have been some of your biggest triumphs as a woman in business?

I really have been blessed with so many personal triumphs throughout my career. The beauty industry is filled with so many amazing women that I have been lucky to work alongside, many encounters which I consider in themselves as triumphs. It’s also been so rewarding meeting our customers and connecting with them on a personal level. Hearing that our products have positively impacted someone’s life makes all the hard work worth it.

What’s a daily or weekly ritual you have that contributes to your ongoing success?

Every Sunday night, my husband Colm and I have a relaxing night to ourselves. We use it to refresh and recharge so that we always start the week off on a good note. I find it so important to set aside some time for yourself before starting into another busy week– it really does the body and mind good.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Stop worrying! There is no need to rush through life, because if you do, you won’t be able to enjoy all of those small moments. Don’t be afraid to take risks either, because you’ll always learn something from them in the end. And finally, trust the process. You may not be where you want to be at the moment, but your time will come. Everything that is meant to be will find its way.
