How to Effectively Control and Treat Frizzy Hair
4 Minute Read

Frizz has always been a complex issue since the invention of modern haircare. Have you ever experienced that dry, rough, and straw like texture? It’s time to prioritize your hair wellness as we look at how you can control and fight frizz!

What is frizzy hair caused by?

Frizzy hair occurs when the moisture in the environment is absorbed into your hair shaft. This results in the swelling of the hair shaft, raising the cuticle and causing a puffing effect. Dry, damaged, porous hair is usually most affected by humidity, although anyone can experience frizz if their hair is lacking moisture.

Several factors can leave your hair more vulnerable to frizz. For example, we should consider how we wash our hair, how we brush it, and what products we can use to get rid of frizzy hair.

How do I stop my hair from frizzing?

  • Avoid brushing & combing wet

Using the wrong brush can rough up hair cuticles and lead to frizz. Never use a boar bristle brush to brush wet hair. Instead, use a brush designed for wet hair. Wide-tooth combs are ideal for frizzy hair because they have more space for hair to pass through the teeth, which helps to prevent breakage. The all-natural bamboo hair comb is gentle on the scalp. It detangles hair with ease, reduces hair breakage, and stimulates blood flow to your scalp.

  • Use a powerful duo to tame frizzy hair

When used in combination with each other, humectants and emollients will help you to both adequately hydrate your hair, while keeping that moisture locked in. One will not be effective without the other in the treatment of frizzy hair, so it’s important to include both in your routine.

You can find both humectants and emollients in our Act+Acre Cold Processed Hair Conditioner. We suggest that you apply a small amount of it to wet hair, leave in for the rest of your shower, rinse with lukewarm water to seal the outlet layer of the hair cuticle, and air dry for a natural, frizz-free finish. Our Act+Acre Cold Processed Hair Cleanse also includes many oils to continue the effects of the conditioner in a more lightweight approach at the scalp.

  • Washing your hair

We should treat the skin on our scalp the same way we treat the skin on our faces. Both extremes, hot and cold water, can cause problems such as dehydration and constriction of nutrients to the scalp. Rinsing at a lukewarm temperature protects both your hair and skin by preventing over-drying and frizzy hair. It is also a myth that you shouldn’t wash your hair too often. Dead skin, pollution, and sweat can all contribute to the hair shaft weakening and causing unhealthy hair growth. The natural sebum we produce is not able to moisturize the hair as the molecule is too big to penetrate, so washing regularly helps to moisturize the hair sufficiently for healthy growth and to avoid frizz.

  • Use a hair mask to nourish hair and get rid of frizz

Hair masks work for all hair types. They are super hydrating and smell delicious. We recommend applying it once a week to dry hair so your hair will absorb all the hydration of the mask instead of sitting on top of already wet hair.

  • Avoid using styling products that can damage your hair

Product-wise, we simply suggest staying away from products that contain silicones, sulfates, and parabens. Many people think to avoid them in their shampoos and conditioners, but forget to check when it comes to styling products. Over time, these can dry out your hair, cause unnecessary build-up, and counteract the products you are using to fight frizz.

  • Frizzy hair mistakes

Avoid 100% oil-based hair products as it's not an effective moisturizer for your hair, which is commonly misunderstood. Many people make the mistake of solely incorporating hair oils into their haircare routine in the hopes that they will bring hydration to their ends, only to be left confused when their hair remains dry and dull. Although oils may make your hair appear more smooth and shiny, they will not absorb into your cuticle the way a humectant does.
